Dear Parents and Guardians,
Ahead of the new season starting, we need to bring your attention to an important safety matter concerning your child's equipment for training and matches: shin guards.
Last season, several players (from all clubs) were wearing smaller, ankle-style or "slip-in" shin guards that do not provide adequate coverage for junior soccer. While these are often more comfortable, they leave a significant area on the shin and lower leg exposed and unprotected.
Why full-length shin guards matter:
- Better protection: Full-length guards cover the area from just below the knee to above the ankle, shielding against the kicks, collisions, and studs that are a normal part of the game.
- League requirements: The league and referees require full-length shin guards as part of mandatory equipment checks. Players without proper guards will not be permitted to take to the field of play.
- Injury prevention: Shin injuries, including fractures, are among the most common — and most preventable — injuries in junior soccer. The right equipment makes a real difference.
What we're asking:
Please check your child's shin guards ahead of the next training session or match. They should:
- Extend from just below the knee to cover the ankle bone
- Fit snugly and stay in place during play (held by tape, sleeves, or straps as needed)
- Be worn under the socks at all times, not as an optional extra
If you have questions about sizing or need guidance, most sport shops and websites can advise you on what's best.
Thank you for helping us keep every player safe on the pitch. We appreciate your continued support and cooperation.
Kind regards,
BC Committee
